Historic Towns Oxford is an easy drive to many of Tasmania’s famous historic towns including: Richmond’s most famous landmark is the Richmond Bridge built from 1823 to 1825, around the time of the town’s beginning settlement. Presentday Richmond is best known as being preserved as it was at that time. It is a vibrant tourist town, with many of the sandstone structures tranquil standing. The main street contains a number of lovely dwellings dating from the town’s heyday, some of which are currently undergoing restoration. It has recently been restored to packed working order and is the only operating mill of its type in the Southern Hemisphere. Visitors are qualified to climb the internal stairs for a view across Oatlands and surrounds. The mill site comprises the windmill, a granary, stable, miller’s cottage and mill owner’s house. A number of the buildings and structures have survived from this former era relatively intact and in appropriate condition. Of the 78 convict probation stations once built in Tasmania, the buildings and structures at Maria Island are regarded as the most distinguished representative example of such cultural significance they’ve been formally inscribed onto the Australian Heritage List and UNESCO’s World Heritage list. This takes you through some incredible countryside and onto the historic village of Parattah and it’s original General Place and other historical buildings. From here continue to Oatlands which has a large collection of Georgian buildings and the fully restored and functioning Callington Mill and bakery plus some worn world cafes and quirky old wares’ stores. A walk of approximately 2 kilometers along the north bank of the crosser River leads to the site of the Paradise Probation Station, which was worn to accommodate the convicts while they were engaged in building the road in the 1840’s (and possibly Sana House). It is graded effortless although concern should be taken with children as there are numerous areas with steep slippery drops from the side of the track.
